The pan-India festival of Makar Sankranti which celebrates the beginning of the harvest season falls on January 14. With agriculture being the mainstay of the Indian economy, harvest festivals are celebrated with vigour across the country. It also marks the end of the winter solstice and the beginning of summer.

Are Banks Open Or Closed On Jan. 14?
According to the holiday calendar of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), banks will be closed in several states on Jan. 14 for Makar Sankranti/ Uttarayana Punyakala/ Pongal/ Maghe Sankranti/ Magh Bihu/ birth anniversary of Hazrat Ali.

Remaining Bank Holidays In January 2025
Here is a list of bank holidays that are still left in January.
Thiruvalluvar Day: January 15 (Wednesday) — Tamil Nadu.
Uzhavar Thirunal: January 16 (Thursday) — Tamil Nadu.
Birthday of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose/Vir Surendrasai Jayanti: Jan. 23 (Thursday) — West Bengal, Tripura and Odisha.
Apart from these public holidays, banks are usually closed on second and fourth Saturdays and all Sundays.
According to the holiday calendar released by the RBI, bank holidays are classified into three broad categories — Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Real Time Gross Settlement Holidays, and Banks' Closing of Accounts.
It must be noted that a bank holiday does not mean all work will be suspended. Only the tasks that require a physical visit to a bank branch will not be done on bank holidays. Remaining services like UPI, ATM transactions, online transactions and internet banking will function as usual.
