In a Budget focused on the middle class, Sitharaman announced that there would be no income tax for people with incomes up to Rs 12 lakh.

Budget 2025: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday presented the second full budget of the Modi 3.0 government. The finance minister in Budget 2025-26 took several measures to fuel the economic growth of India to reach the goal of ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047.
Presenting the Union Budget 2025, Nirmala Sitharaman said that the Budget will initiate reforms in six domains – taxation, urban development, mining, financial sector, power and regulatory reforms.
"In this Budget, the proposed development measures span 10 broad areas, focussing on the poor, youth, farmers and women," the FM said further.
In a Budget focused on the middle class, Sitharaman announced that there would be no income tax for people with incomes up to Rs 12 lakh. For salaried persons, this will go up to Rs 12.75 lakh with the standard deduction of Rs 75,000.
Further, the Tax deducted at source (TDS) limit for senior citizens has been doubled from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh. Budget 2025 further extended the time limit to file updated returns, from the current two years to four years.
The Kisan Credit Card limit has also been extended up to Rs 5 lakh to facilitate short-term loans for 7.7 crore farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers.
A day ahead of presenting the Union Budget 2025, Nirmala Sitharaman also tabled the Economic Survey 2024-25 at the Lok Sabha. Prepared by the Chief Economic Advisor of India, the Economic Survey is an annual document outlining how the country’s state of economy has been over the previous year. The document also gives an overview of its short-term to medium-term prospects.
According to the Economic Survey presented on Jan. 31, India’s real GDP is estimated to have a growth of 6.4% driven by agriculture and services. Rural demand saw improvement thanks to record Kharif production. Manufacturing faced challenges due to weak global demand, it said. Macroeconomic stability was upheld through fiscal discipline and a robust external balance, as per the survey.
On the outlook for FY26, the economic survey said that this fiscal is set to have a balanced outlook coupled with headwinds from global uncertainties and shocks in the commodity price front.
Domestically, key drivers for promoting growth include increased investment, improved consumer confidence, and corporate wage growth.
