The Palo Alto City Council has given a $10,000 grant to help care for three donkeys living in Bol Park, Northern California, United States. This includes Perry, the real-life inspiration for the character Donkey in the 'Shrek' movies, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.

The extra money is needed because a new donkey has joined the park, and the other donkeys are getting older. Perry is 30 years old and lives with Buddy, who is 24, and April, who is 15.

These donkeys are loved by both locals and visitors. Perry is special not just because of his connection to 'Shrek', but also because he brings joy to everyone who sees him.

Jenny Kiratli, the main person taking care of the donkeys, explained to the Los Angeles Times that their care has become more expensive. "It used to cost about $12,000 to $15,000 a year to care for the donkeys, but now it can cost up to $40,000 because of the new donkey and their health issues," she said.

The community loves the donkeys and finds comfort in visiting them. "People visit the donkeys because it's a calm place to go. The world makes sense when you’re there," Kiratli added.

Not everyone on the council agreed with the grant. Council member Greg Tanaka said, "I have to object to giving $10,000 away because the city is losing money. We have a deficit for the next four years. It just seems irresponsible to me."

But Mayor Greer Stone defended the decision, saying the money comes from the city council's contingency fund, which still has $77,000 left. He explained that if the council doesn't spend this money before July 1, it will be lost.

Perry, Buddy, and April now spend their days happily roaming in the park. "There is something very therapeutic about donkeys. It’s a break from the stresses and the pace of Silicon Valley," Kiratli said.
