World Autism Awareness Day 2024: History

The United Nations General Assembly established World Autism Awareness Day in December 2007 to increase public awareness about the issues people with autism grapple with. The inaugural event was celebrated on April 2, 2008. This day is part of a larger campaign called 'Light It Up Blue', organised by the Autism Speaks organisation. It encourages people and businesses to shine blue lights in their communities to promote autism awareness.

World Autism Awareness Day 2024 will seek to provide a global overview of the state of affairs for the first time from the perspective of autistic people themselves.

This event will have an all-autistic line-up of panellists from all walks of life, representing six regions: Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, North America and Oceania who will speak on the current scenario in their respective regions, as well as the importance of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for autistic people to be able to thrive.
