Rs 2.7 Lakh Rent, Rs 15 Lakh Deposit For Bengaluru Flat Sparks Outrage Online

A rental listing for a 3BHK apartment in Bengaluru’s Haralur area quoting a monthly rent of Rs 2.7 lakh and a security deposit of Rs 15 lakh has triggered outrage online.

The 1,464 square feet flat, described by one Reddit user as “decent-ish” at best, drew attention after a screenshot of the listing was shared on the platform.

The user questioned the exorbitant rental charges, writing, “Is this really something people pay for? I looked at the images they've provided and it looks at best a decent-ish apartment. What is going on?” 

The post quickly went viral, with users questioning the high price tag and suggesting the listing might be an error.

A user commented, “I think an extra zero has been added by mistake.”

Another added, “I think it may be a mistake, people are not stupid to pay such amounts.”

“I pay 80k per month (exc. maintenance which is variable) for a fully furnished flat.. furnished to the brim. What's this nonsense? Hope it’s a troll post,” read another comment.

“I will be disappointed if it doesn’t have a helipad,” a user joked.

This isn’t the first time Bengaluru’s rental market has left the internet shocked.

In February, a viral video showed a painfully cramped one-bedroom flat being rented out for over Rs 25,000 a month. An Instagram user posted the clip, claiming the space belonged to his friend. In the video, he stood in the centre of the room and easily touched both walls with his hands, then also showed the length across the room. The entire room was barely bigger than the height of a grown-up adult.

The balcony, he pointed out, could only accommodate one person. Sarcastically, the man highlighted the “advantages” of the space. No space to store things meant saving money, and the flat was so small that he joked, “you won’t need to spend on a girlfriend because this place can only fit one person.”

Rental prices in Bengaluru have surged, with some areas witnessing increases of up to 50% year-on-year. For instance, a 2BHK apartment in Koramangala now commands approximately Rs 70,000 per month, nearing the cost of similar accommodations in New York suburbs. In prime localities like Indiranagar and Whitefield, rents have escalated by 40–50% over the past year, driven by high demand and limited housing supply, according to reports.
