Hottest Cities In India: This Rajasthan City Sizzles At 46 Degrees Celsius, Check Full List

Several states like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh faced heatwave conditions as temperatures crossed 40 degrees Celsius in many cities.

Rajasthan’s Ganganagar sizzled at a scorching 45.8 degrees Celsius on May 15, making it the hottest place in India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday. The temperature was based on data collected at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Besides Rajasthan, several states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh also faced heatwave conditions as temperatures crossed 40 degrees Celsius in many cities. At least five cities of Rajasthan recorded temperatures above 44 degrees Celsius, significantly higher than the normal levels during this period of the year.

Varanasi in UP, Gaya in Bihar, Daltonganj in Jharkhand, Delhi and Ambala were other cities that topped the heatwave charts, released by the weather agency on May 16.

  • Jaisalmer - 44.9 degrees Celsius

  • Bikaner - 44.8 degrees Celsius

  • Barmer - 44.2 degrees Celsius

National capital Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 42.5 degrees Celsius at the Aya Nagar station, the IMD said. According to the weather body, a heat wave condition is declared for plains when the maximum temperature of a station reaches at least 40 degrees Celsius or more. 

The IMD noted that north Indian cities are unlikely to get relief from the ongoing heatwave conditions anytime soon. The IMD’s seven-day forecast predicts heat wave conditions in several states such as MP, Bihar, UP, Punjab and Rajasthan till May 20. While states like Jharkhand and Odisha are expected to experience hot and humid conditions during this period.

“Gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius likely over northwest India during the next two days and no large change thereafter for the subsequent four days,” the IMD said on Thursday. Similar conditions are likely in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

May 18: East Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and West Rajasthan

May 19: Madhya Pradesh, West Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh

May 20: Madhya Pradesh and West Rajasthan

East Uttar Pradesh is likely to experience warm night conditions till May 17, the IMD said.
