Mulayam Singh Yadav Death: PM Modi, Other Political Leaders Express Grief

Mulayam Singh Yadav, a former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and founder of the Samajwadi Party, has died aged 82.

Mulayam Singh Yadav, former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and founder of the Samajwadi Party, has died aged 82.

Yadav, a three-time chief minister, was shifted to the ICU of Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Oct. 2 after his health deteriorated.

His son and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav shared the news on Twitter: "My respected father and everyone's leader is no more."

The 82-year-old leader was being treated at Medanta Hospital since Aug. 22 under the supervision of oncologists Nitin Sood and Sushil Kataria, according to a PTI report.

Yadav was among the Indian politicians jailed during the Emergency in 1975, a defining moment for a generation of leaders in India.

Several politicians, ministers and businessmen condoled Yadav's death.

"Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji distinguished himself in UP and national politics. He was a key soldier for democracy during the Emergency," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Twitter.

"As Defence Minister, he worked for a stronger India. His Parliamentary interventions were insightful and emphasised on furthering national interest" the PM tweeted.

"Saddened that Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav is no more. His contributions in laying the foundations for a stronger India and expansive UP will be long remembered", Gautam Adani, chairman of Adani Group said in a tweet.

"A rare titan, MSY will be missed. My deepest condolences to Shri Akhilesh Yadav and family", he tweeted.

"The death of Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav ji is very sad news. He was a true warrior associated with grassroots politics. I express my deepest condolences to all the bereaved family members including Shri Akhilesh Yadav", Rahul Gandhi said on tweet.

"Received the sad news of the demise of former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and socialist leader Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav", Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal said in a tweet

"May God rest the departed soul at his feet and give strength to all his fans and family members to bear this immense loss. peace", he tweeted.

"The death of Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav is an irreparable loss to the country. The achievements of Mulayam Singh Yadav ji, who came from an ordinary environment, were extraordinary", President Droupadi Murmu said in a tweet.

"'Dharti Putra' Mulayam ji was a veteran leader associated with the land. He was respected by people of all parties. My deepest condolences to his family members and supporters!", she tweeted.

"Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav ji was a grassroots leader who played a prominent role in the politics of Uttar Pradesh for many decades", Rajnath Singh said in a tweet.

"In his long public life, he worked in many positions and contributed to the development of the country, society and the state. His death is very painful", he tweeted.
