The Delhi government's upcoming Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0 aims to phase out vehicles running on fossil fuels and promote the use of electric vehicles across the metropolis, according to officials
Starting Aug. 15 this year, new registrations for CNG-powered autorickshaws will not be allowed, and existing CNG auto permits will not be renewed, with only e-auto permits being issued. Moreover, CNG autorickshaws older than 10 years must either be replaced or retrofitted to run on batteries. By Aug. 15, 2026, two-wheelers using petrol, diesel, or compressed natural gas will no longer be allowed, while new registrations for goods carrier three-wheelers powered by these fuels will stop from Aug. 15, 2025.
Additionally, garbage collection vehicles owned or leased by municipal bodies must transition to an entirely electric fleet by Dec. 31, 2027. Public transport buses operated by the DTC and DIMTS will also shift to e-buses, with new buses for city use being electric and inter-state buses adhering to BS VI standards.
Furthermore, private car owners with two or more vehicles will only be allowed to purchase electric cars once the policy comes into effect. The policy's ultimate goal is to minimise the use of fossil fuels and accelerate the adoption of cleaner, eco-friendly transportation in the city.
The draft policy may undergo changes during approval of the cabinet, particularly in the recommendation related to two-wheelers, officials said.
The Delhi government extended its current Electric Vehicle policy by 15 days following its expiration on March 31. This extension is expected to be the final, as the new draft policy is almost complete, officials said.
The policy will be notified after its approval by the Delhi Cabinet. It seeks to improve the situation of air pollution in Delhi with replacement of large number of fossil fuel-run vehicles in an aggressive manner, they added.
