The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy rainfall and snowfall in several states across the country. Two western disturbances in the northwestern part of India and a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal will continue to bring rainfall and snowfall across the country over the next three to five days, IMD said.
Heavy Rainfall Due To Low-Pressure Area In These States
In its daily bulletin on Dec. 23, the IMD stated that the well-marked low-pressure area over the west-central Bay of Bengal persists and is likely to move west-southwestwards, reaching the southwest Bay of Bengal near the coasts of north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh around Dec. 24.
As a result, isolated areas in coastal Andhra Pradesh are expected to experience heavy rainfall from Dec. 23 to Dec. 26, while several other locations in the region are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall.
Coastal areas of Odisha are likely to see isolated heavy rainfall on Dec. 24, and light to moderate rainfall on Dec. 25.
Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from Dec. 25 to Dec. 26.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema are likely from Dec. 23 to Dec. 26. Similar conditions are expected in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on Dec. 25-26, as well as Madhya Maharashtra from Dec. 26 to Dec. 28.
“Fishermen are advised not to venture into west central and southwest Bay of Bengal along and off Andhra Pradesh, north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry coasts till 26th morning,” the IMD said.
Western Disturbances To Bring Snow And Rain In These States
The Western disturbance is lying as a cyclonic circulation in middle tropospheric levels over northern Pakistan and adjoining Afghanistan, the IMD said. Under its influence, light and moderate rainfall and snowfall are likely at a few places over the Western Himalayan Region until Dec. 24.
Light rainfall at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Rajasthan are also expected on Dec. 23.
“Another intense Western Disturbance is very likely to affect Northwest India from the night of 26th December onwards,” the IMD said.
An “induced cyclonic circulation” is very likely to form over southwest Rajasthan and its neighbourhood on Dec. 27 due to this.
“These systems are likely to interact with lower level easterlies leading to high moisture feeding from the Arabian Sea as well as the Bay of Bengal till 28th December,” said the IMD.
As a result, isolated to scattered rainfall and snowfall are expected in the Western Himalayan region between Dec. 26 and Dec. 28, with peak activity occurring on Dec. 27 and 28.
Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall is also likely over plains of northwest India and adjoining central India on Dec. 27 and Dec. 28, as well as Maharashtra and Gujarat on Dec. 28.
Thunderstorms accompanied by hailstorms are also expected over northwest India on Dec. 27 and Dec. 28
Cold Wave Conditions
The IMD further predicted cold wave to severe cold wave conditions in some parts of Himachal Pradesh from Dec. 24 to Dec 26.
Cold wave conditions are also very likely in isolated pockets over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad until Dec. 26, as well as in Himachal Pradesh on Dec. 23.
Dense Fog Warnings
Dense Fog conditions are very likely in isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura from Dec. 24 to Dec. 26. Similar conditions are also likely during late night/early mornings in Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan on Dec. 23.
