Oil & Natural Gas Corp., Shriram Finance Ltd., Bharat Petroleum Corp., Coal India Ltd. and Tata Motors Ltd. were among the top NSE Nifty 50 losers on Thursday.
On the flip side, Nestle India Ltd., Bajaj Auto Ltd., Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., Hindustan Unilever Ltd., and Britannia Industries Ltd. gained the most in an otherwise falling market.
Indian equity benchmarks extended Wednesday's fall to a second session on Thursday. Nifty closed at 23,526.50, down 0.69% or 162.45 points and Sensex ended at 77,620.21, 0.68% or 528.28 points lower.
Top Losers
Oil & Natural Gas Corp. was the top loser among Nifty stocks after gaining for two consecutive sessions on CLSA's rating upgrade. The stock closed at around Rs 263, erasing Wednesday's rise.
This was followed by Shriram Finance Ltd., which fell ahead of the company’s upcoming stock split. The ex-date for the 1:5 sub-division of equity shares is set for Jan. 10. It fell as much as 3.12% intraday to hit Rs 2,808.45, its lowest level since Nov. 22.
After one-day rise, Bharat Petroleum Corp. fell again by as much as 2.6% intraday to Rs 279.45, its lowest level since Nov. 21. Coal India Ltd. was among the top losers, falling after two-sessions of gains. Tata Steel Ltd., also a laggard, lost as much as 2.2% to hit Rs 129.7, its lowest level in around a year.
Top Gainers
Bajaj Auto Ltd. rose the most among Nifty stocks after CLSA's rating upgrade to 'outperform'. Nestle India gained the second-most among Nifty stocks and added as much as 2.3% intraday to hit Rs 2,271.8, its highest level since Dec. 9.
Hindustan Unilever Ltd. gained for a third session as FMCG stocks outperformed in a falling market. Britannia Industries Ltd. rose to hit its highest level since Nov. 14 of Rs 5,050.
Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.'s stock was also among top gainers in Nifty.
