The government on Tuesday assigned Economic Affairs Secretary Ajay Seth to take additional charge of the new revenue secretary after Sanjay Malhotra was moved to take over as the Reserve Bank of India Governor. Seth will handle the additional responsibility till the government finds a regular replacement for the office.
"The Competent Authority has approved assignment of additional charge of the post of Secretary, Department of Revenue to Shri Ajay Seth, lAS (KN:1987), Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs with immediate effect till the appointment of a regular incumbent or until further orders, whichever is earlier," said a notification from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
The Department of Revenue comes under the overall direction and supervision of the Union Finance Minister. It exercises monitoring, supervision and administration in respect of matters relating to all the direct and indirect central taxes through two statutory boards—the Central Board of Direct Taxes and the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs.
Who Is Ajay Seth
Ajay Seth is a 1987-batch Karnataka cadre Indian Administrative Service officer. He took charge as Economic Affairs Secretary on April 15, 2021.
The bureaucrat has a career spanning 33 years, with 18 years in public finance and taxation, and nearly three years each in the social sector and urban transport and infrastructure, holding various positions in the Union government, Karnataka state government, and the Asian Development Bank, according to a profile on the RBI website.
He is a recipient of Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration in 2013, being a member of the team for "transformation of commercial tax administration in Karnataka".
He earned a BTech (Mechanical) degree from the University of Roorkee and an MBA from Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines.
Earlier this week, Malhotra replaced Shaktikanta Das as the RBI Governor, and will take office on Dec. 11.
A 1990-batch Indian Administrative Service officer from the Rajasthan cadre, Malhotra is an engineering graduate in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and holds a master's in public policy from Princeton University, USA.
