Tata Power has commissioned its 4.3 GW solar cell manufacturing unit in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu this week. The commissioning of this line takes the company's total solar module and cell manufacturing capacity to over 4.8 GW each.
The Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu plant which is spread over 317 acres of land, was designed in a way of lot of 'open space', stated CEO and MD Praveer Sinha. 'The plant has adequate space to expand capacity' said Sinha as he revealed that the company can expand its manufacturing capacity by another 4 GW at the same site. However, it is to be noted that a decision on expansion is yet to be made.
NDTV Profit visited the Tirunelveli based manufacturing unit on December 6.
Preference To Domestic Market
"We have set this plant to cater to the Indian market", Sinha told reporters at the media event that celebrated the commissioning of the India's largest single location solar manufacturing unit.
Sinha also states that the company plans to use all its produced solar modules for domestic markets and has no plans to export the modules or cells as of now. He highlighted that the units' production has been tied up for the next 12 to 16 months.
Key Customers
When asked about who the solar modules produced at the unit would cater to, Sinha said that 50% of the solar modules will be used for the company's own solar utility projects- which were worth Rs 7485 crore as of Sept, 2024.
Balance of the solar modules will cater to Tata Power's 3rd party solar utility EPC projects from companies like SJVN, NTPC, NHPC and more.
The company will also use its solar modules and cells for its solar rooftop segment- who's order book stood at Rs 684 crore as of Sept, 2024. It is to be noted that Tata Power is currently the market leader in the Solar Rooftop EPC segment, holding 13.1% market share. The company expects this industry to grow at a 36% compounded annual growth rate between FY24-30.
Current Production
Sinha revealed that the company's 4.3 GW module plant is currently at full capacity and is also ramping up the solar cell line.
Current daily production at the plant is at 4 MW, which Tata Power plans to ramp up to 10 MW soon.
Total Solar Manufacturing Capacity
Tata Power's solar manufacturing capabilities is spread across two locations. The company's Bengaluru based facility has capacity to produce 682 MW of solar modules and 530 MW of solar cells.
The company's Tirunelveli facility has 4.3 GW solar module and cell manufacturing capacity each. The plant is also the first PLI granted integrated solar cell and module plant.
The company produced a total of 1500 MW of solar modules in H1FY25. The company plans to ramp up its solar module and cell production to 4 GW in FY26
