Ashok Leyland aims to sell about 1,000 units of newly-launched multi-purpose vehicle Stile by the end of the current fiscal year.
The multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), launched recently at some places including Delhi and four other towns in Tamil Nadu, has received a good response Naga Senthil Prabhu, regional manager (LCV) of the southern regions covering Tamil Nadu and Kerala, told reporters on Wednesday.
Speaking at the launch of the vehicle in Coimbatore on Wednesday, Mr Prabhu attributed the success of the multi-purpose vehicle to its fuel efficiency of 20.7 km per litre.
"Enquiries and bookings for the vehicle are very good and the company will sell at least 1,000 vehicle before this financial year," he said.
Stating that the MPV segment is showing flat growth, he said the commercial vehicle maker tapped this segment as there is more space for newer vehicles and expects a good market share in the next fiscal year.
India's MPV segment saw a 40 per cent growth in fiscal year 2012-13 (FY13).
Moreover, the company's major focus would be the tourist and maxi cab segments, he said.
The Stile is being manufactured at the Oragadam plant of Nissan-Renault, which has a capacity to produce 20,000 to 30,000 vehicles annually, he said.
He also said the prices of the three variants will range from Rs 7.4 lakh to Rs 9.35 lakh.
"If the company feels the pressure on production schedule, it will think of starting a new plant. However there is no immediate possibility to start a new plant."
Ashok Leyland would expand its dealer-cum-garage network to 200 by this fiscal year from 130 at present, he said.
