A family lawyer confirmed that she passed away on Wednesday in Rancho Mirage, California, due to metastatic cancer, surrounded by loved ones.
She is survived by her daughters, Amanda Lucas and Amy Soper, and grandchildren. A family statement described her work as marked by emotional intelligence, rhythm, and humanity, adding that she made both films and life feel more vivid, meaningful, and full of love.

Who Was Marcia Lucas?
Born Marcia Griffin in Modesto, California, shortly after World War II, she moved to Los Angeles with her mother following her parents' divorce. She began her career in the film industry as a librarian before moving into editing work on commercials, trailers, and promotional films. Her early break came as an assistant editor on the documentary Journey to the Pacific, where she worked under editor Dede Allen and met filmmaker George Lucas, whom she later married in 1969.
Marcia Lucas played a crucial role in shaping some of cinema's most iconic films. She won an Academy Award for editing Star Wars (1977) and also worked on Return of the Jedi (1983), as well as George Lucas's earlier films THX 1138 and American Graffiti. Her editing contributions include Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, and New York, New York.
Marcia Lucas was among the pioneering women editors of New Hollywood, alongside Dede Allen, Verna Fields, and Thelma Schoonmaker, who shaped films by male directors through the late 1960s to early 1980s with influential, award-winning editing work.
