Senior Trump administration official Tulsi Gabbard on Friday announced her resignation, noting that she would be exiting from her role as the Director of National Intelligence.

Her exit comes amid the ongoing war with Iran, which, according to critics, has yielded limited military success for the United States.

While Gabbard cited family medical emergency as the primary reason behind her decision to quit, the resignation comes amid growing internal tensions within the administration over the handling of the Iran conflict and disagreements within the US intelligence establishment.

In the resignation letter addressed to President Donald Trump, Gabbard said she was stepping down to care for her husband, Abraham Williams, who has been diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer.

While Gabbard maintained that her decision was entirely personal, reports suggest Trump had privately expressed frustration with her leadership in recent months.

According to reports, Trump had questioned whether Gabbard should continue in the role after she allegedly defended former deputy Joe Kent, who resigned after arguing that Iran did not pose an imminent threat to the United States.

The disagreement reportedly intensified following Gabbard's testimony before Congress, where she declined to publicly criticise Kent.

In her resignation letter, Gabbard thanked Trump for the opportunity to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and highlighted efforts made under her tenure to increase transparency and restore credibility within the intelligence community.

Gabbard said she would continue assisting with the transition process until her resignation takes effect on June 30, 2026.

Her exit marks the second high-profile departure from the Trump administration in recent weeks.

Earlier, Pam Bondi stepped down as US Attorney General following criticism over her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein-related files investigation and the lack of progress in prosecutions sought by Trump against his political rivals.

Bondi, considered one of Trump's closest allies, had overseen a sweeping restructuring of the Justice Department, including intensified crackdowns on illegal immigration and public corruption investigations.
