The US-Iran memorandum of understanding US President Trump says will soon be signed calls for the Strait of Hormuz to reopen immediately without tolls, a diplomat from one of the mediating countries and a US official said as reported by Axios. It also ties Iran's sanctions relief to compliance with the agreement.
The MOU would extend the ceasefire for 60 days, including in Lebanon, while nuclear negotiations take place. It outlines a framework for addressing Iran's enriched uranium stockpile, but any action on Iran's nuclear program would require a second, more detailed accord.
Trump said that a deal to end the war with Iran is nearly complete and is expected to be signed over the weekend in Europe, as he called off military strikes on the gulf nation hours after threatening to take control of its oil industry.
Trump, speaking to reporters at the Oval office on Thursday afternoon, said Vice President J D Vance is expected to attend the signing ceremony which could take place in Europe as soon as this weekend.
The US president said he has spoken to leaders of the Middle Eastern countries, including Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and Pakistan, regarding the latest round of negotiations.
Later, addressing a tele-rally in favour of Georgia Lt Governor Burt Jones, who is running for the post of Governor, Trump declared that the US has ended the war with Iran.
Earlier, at the Oval Office, Trump said that the stock market "likes the deal" and there would be a signing quickly. He said the Strait of Hormuz would reopen once the agreement is finalised. Trump claimed that Iran has committed to permanently abandoning any effort to obtain a nuclear weapon.
Iran War Live Updates: Iran-US MoU Details
- The MOU calls for the Strait Of Hormuz to be reopened immediately without tolls, with a return to pre-war shipping volumes within 30 days. In return, the US blockade would also be lifted.
- US officials previously told Axios that after reopening the strait, Iran would be given temporary sanctions waivers to allow it to sell oil for 60 days. That would generate precious revenue for Tehran.
- The sanctions relief would increase if Iran complies with the initial agreement and shows "good faith" in subsequent negotiations.
- "There is no set date for sanctions relief and it will be tied to the implementation of the deal," the diplomat said.

Iran War Live Updates: MoU Details
The details of MoU are as follows:
Under the MOU, Iran would make certain commitments on its nuclear program — first and foremost to never acquire a nuclear weapon and to resolve the standoff around its enriched uranium.
A senior US official said Trump agreed that one of the options for resolving the issue could be down-blending Iran's highly enriched uranium inside the country under the supervision of UN inspectors.
Any steps on Iran's nuclear program would only take place if a second deal is reached — an uncertain prospect given how difficult the far less technical negotiations over the MOU have been.
The diplomat claimed the MOU "goes into details on all the nuclear issues" and "satisfies all US requirements."

They got hit very hard recently, as you know. And I don't like to have to do things that way, but I felt it was necessary.
It's a great deal for the US and for the Middle East, and I think ultimately great for Iran because they'll be able to build up their country... I really believe it's a regime change because I find these people to be much more rational than the people that are no longer with us.
We knocked out the first team of leadership, the second team of leadership. This is a different group. This is a different level. I think it's, frankly, a smarter level, and it's a level that has reason...
Everybody's approved the deal. Now we'll get it finished up, and hopefully that'll be done... Iran will in no way, or form have a nuclear weapon or purchase a nuclear weapon."
