Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax and his wife Cerina Fairfax were found dead at their home in Annandale, Virginia, in what police described as a murder-suicide, with investigators now examining whether the couple's ongoing divorce battle may have played a role in the tragedy.

Officers responded to the family's home in Annandale, Virginia, shortly after midnight after receiving a 911 call from the couple's teenage son. When police arrived, they found both Justin Fairfax and his wife dead from gunshot wounds. Their two teenage children were at the family's Annandale home at the time of the shootings.

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis told reporters that investigators believe Fairfax, a 47 year old Democrat, shot his wife before turning the gun on himself.

Investigators said the couple had been going through a divorce and that Fairfax had recently been served with court papers setting a future appearance date, a development police believe may have been linked to the shooting.

Police Chief Kevin Davis said the timing of the court documents may have been significant. “That may have been a spark,” he said. “Detectives will figure out if that led to this tragedy here.” Davis also called the case devastating for the community and said many people who knew the family were in shock.

As per reports, Police had been called to the residence once prior, in January of this year, when Justin Fairfax accused his wife of assault, Davis said. Officers determined no incident had occurred after reviewing footage from cameras Cerina Fairfax had set up inside the house.

“The allegation that Mr Fairfax made in January, that Mrs Fairfax assaulted him, was proven to be untrue,” Davis said.

A political career already marked by scandal

Fairfax, a Democrat, rose rapidly in Virginia politics and was briefly seen as a possible successor to then-Governor Ralph Northamfuture. That trajectory changed in 2019, when two women publicly accused him of sexual assault. He denied the allegations and refused calls to resign. The controversy ultimately derailed his broader political ambitions.

In 2021, Fairfax sought the Democratic gubernatorial nomination but finished in fourth place, with 3.54% of the vote.

Authorities have not announced any charges in connection with the deaths, and the investigation remains ongoing. The focus now is on reconstructing the sequence of events inside the home and determining what triggered the violence. Police said the matter appears to have been domestic in nature, and the chief stressed the emotional toll on the family and community.
