At a White House state dinner, Britain's monarch King Charles III delivered a witty response to remarks by US President Donald Trump, drawing laughter during an otherwise formal evening.
Speaking during the traditional exchange of toasts, King Charles appeared to reference Trump's earlier comments suggesting that without US intervention, parts of Europe might have been speaking German following World War II.
Offering a humorous counterpoint rooted in history, the King said, “You recently commented, Mr President, that if it were not for the United States, European countries would be speaking German. Dare I say that, if it wasn't for us, you'd be speaking French.”
