8th Pay Commission Updates: What Has Happened In The First Six Months

Submissions made by the new Commission are expected to benefit around 50 lakh Central government employees and 69 lakh pensioners.

The 8th Pay Commission completed its first six months this week, with prelimnary steps initiated as part of its mandate. On Nov. 3, 2025, the government issued a notification to constitute the 8th Pay Commission, headed by Justice (Retd.) Ranjana Prakash Desai. The Commission was set up in January 2026.

It is tasked with revising the salaries of Central government employees and allowances of pensioners. The submissions made by the 8th Pay Commission are expected to benefit around 50 lakh Central government employees and 69 lakh pensioners. The body has been directed to submit its report within 18 months and release interim reports in between.

In the first six months, many key steps were taken by the Commission, starting with hiring of staff in early April. The National Council (Joint Consultative Machinery) or NC-JCM, the apex representative body for Central government employees, also submitted its demands last month. A formal meeting between the Commission and the representative body was subsequently held.

Details of Six-Month Progress: 

1. From April 10, the 8th CPC began engaging stakeholders and opened 20 consultant vacancies. It also announced some part-time options. 
2. By mid-April, the NC-JCM submitted a detailed 51-page memorandum, outlining important demands and suggestions. 
3. The first formal meeting between the NC-JCM and the 8th Pay Commission was held in Delhi on April 28. 
4. Meetings with other stakeholders were also held by the Commission at the end of April in Delhi. However, due to a large number of requests, the Commission announced on April 24 that more meetings would be scheduled later in the national capital in the coming months.
5. The Commission has also invited representations, memoranda and suggestions from Central government employees, services, pensioners, unions and departments by May 31.

What's Next:

The Commission has announced a series of meetings with stakeholders across various states and Union Territories. These meetings are aimed at gathering suggestions and inputs from employees, associations and departments.

According to the Commission's website, the current schedule includes a visit to Pune on May 4 to 5. Earlier, it announced visits to Hyderabad on May 18 and 19; Srinagar from June 1 to 4; and Ladakh on June 8.
