OpenAI has rolled out a major upgrade to ChatGPT's memory feature, allowing it to reference past conversations for a more personalised experience. The move is aimed at enhancing the AI chatbot's capabilities in understanding the user by learning about them over time.
In a post on X, CEO Sam Altman confirmed the development, adding that the feature is optional and can be chosen based on user preference.
“We have greatly improved memory in ChatGPT--it can now reference all your past conversations! This is a surprisingly great feature imo, and it points at something we are excited about: AI systems that get to know you over your life and become extremely useful and personalised,” Altman said in a post on X.

According to Altman, the rollout will extend to Plus users in the near future. However, the feature is not yet accessible in some regions.

For users concerned about privacy, OpenAI assures that the feature is fully user-controlled. Individuals can opt out of memory or choose to use temporary chat, which prevents their conversation history from being saved.
Advertisement“If you want to have a conversation that doesn't use memory, you can start a Temporary Chat,” OpenAI said. To activate a temporary chat, users can simply tap the version of ChatGPT they are using at the top of the chat window on chatgpt.com and then select "Temporary chat".
To get a glimpse of the memory feature, users can ask the AI chatbot, “What do you remember about me?”
“Whether you're typing, speaking, or generating images, it remembers your preferences and past interactions to personalise responses,” OpenAI explained in a blog. Users can also reset memory or delete specific information, according to their preferences.
Enhancing personalisation in AI systems and increasing their contextual awareness is one of the key development areas for the sector. OpenAI, rivals to Google, Amazon, and Meta, among others, are also involved in building similar capabilities for their AI assistants.
