Apple is expected to introduce the A20 Pro chip alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max at its September 9 "Surprise and Shine" event.

The chip is tipped to be the first Apple smartphone processor manufactured on TSMC's 2nm process, a shift expected to bring meaningful improvements in speed, efficiency and AI performance compared to the current A19 Pro.

Why The Move To 2nm Matters

Shrinking from 3nm to 2nm isn't just a smaller number on a spec sheet, it involves a genuine change in how the transistors themselves are built. TSMC's newer node switches to what's called a nanosheet design, an approach the company has positioned as capable of squeezing in more transistors per chip while also cutting down on power draw, essentially a fuller across-the-board upgrade rather than a minor tweak to the existing 3nm layout.

For everyday use, that kind of jump usually shows up as a phone that can do more without burning through battery any faster, which matters for things like extended gaming sessions, heavier photo editing, or running AI models directly on the device rather than leaning on the cloud.

How The A20 Pro Compares To The A19 Pro

The current A19 Pro, which debuted in the iPhone 17 Pro, runs on a 3nm process with a six-core CPU and six-core GPU, alongside Neural Accelerators built into its GPU architecture. The A20 Pro is expected to carry forward that same focus on CPU, GPU and neural processing, but its move to 2nm should make the underlying chip architecture more efficient overall.

One unverified leak has claimed an 18% graphics improvement, though that figure hasn't been confirmed and shouldn't be treated as an official number.

A Longer Chip Evolution

Apple's chip manufacturing has steadily advanced over recent generations. The A17 Pro was the first to use 3nm manufacturing, arriving with the iPhone 15 Pro, and by the time the A18 Pro launched in the iPhone 16 Pro, Apple had refined that into a second wave of 3nm chips built with more compact, quicker transistors and an upgraded Neural Engine capable of running tasks more efficiently.

The A19 Pro largely stuck to that same 3nm foundation for the iPhone 17 Pro, which makes the A20 Pro's expected jump to 2nm a considerably bigger manufacturing shift than recent year-over-year updates.

AI Performance May Be The Real Differentiator

The A20 Pro's biggest impact might not show up in raw benchmark numbers at all. Apple's chips increasingly serve as the backbone for on-device AI, computational photography and video processing. As a point of reference, the A18's 16-core Neural Engine was reportedly capable of processing machine-learning tasks about twice as quickly as its predecessor, the A16 Bionic, giving a sense of how fast Apple's AI-focused silicon has been improving generation over generation.
