US tech major GoPro has introduced a new flagship camera line called Mission 1 to compete with rivals Insta360 and DJI. The new cameras, branded as “the world's smallest, lightest, and most rugged 8K and 4K Open Gate cinema cameras, will likely improve image quality over its current Hero 13.

The new series uses a 50-megapixel one-inch sensor and a new GP3 processor. This allows up to 8K 60fps video, better low-light performance, and improved battery and heat handling. There are three models in the series: Mission 1, Mission 1 Pro, and Mission 1 Pro ILS. The Pro model supports higher frame rates, while the ILS version has an interchangeable lens system, the company said in a press release.
On the launch, Pablo Lema, GoPro's Senior Vice President of Product, said: "The combination of our new 50 megapixel 1” sensor and ultra-efficient GP3 processor sets a new performance bar for compact cinema cameras, enabling resolutions, frame rates, low-light performance, runtimes and thermal capabilities never seen before in cameras this small.”
The Mission 1 features an updated lens design with a 159-degree field of view, the widest in its category. It has a larger OLED rear display, bigger glove-friendly buttons, and a removable lens hood that reduces glare and lens flare.
GP3 Processor Benefits
The GP3 processor in the series uses a power-efficient 5nm design for high performance and better image quality. “Industry-Leading 8K30 and 4K120 Open Gate Video is supported in MISSION 1 PRO and MISSION 1 PRO ILS, enabling full sensor 4:3 captures for added flexibility for reframing, editing, and exporting content in multiple aspect ratios for different viewing platforms. The Series' base model, MISSION 1, supports 4K120 Open Gate video capture,” GoPro said.
The Mission 1 uses the Enduro 2 battery, offering over three hours of 4K 30p recording and faster charging. It supports Hero 13 batteries with shorter life. Mission 1 supports microSD storage but has no internal memory.
Other smart features in the Mission 1 series include smart capture modes like subject tracking, underwater stabilization, slow motion, timelapse, etc. For audio, it has a four-mic setup with 32-bit float recording, stereo sound, wind reduction, and Bluetooth 5.3 or USB-C support for external microphones.
Mission 1 Pro ILS
The Mission 1 Pro ILS is an interchangeable-lens action camera with a mount compatible with Micro Four Thirds lenses from brands like Panasonic and OM System. It is one of the first action cameras to support such a system.
It's "the world's smallest, most rugged and versatile high-speed cinema camera at a fraction of the cost and size of comparable cameras," GoPro said. However, larger lenses may make it too heavy for helmets or body mounting, making it more suitable for vehicle-based shooting.
