- Google tests “Ask YouTube,” an AI chatbot-style search feature on YouTube
- Users can ask natural language questions and get AI summaries with relevant videos
- Feature available to YouTube Premium users aged 18+ in the United States currently
Google is experimenting with a new AI-powered search experience on YouTube that feels more like a conversation rather than a traditional keyword-based query.
Dubbed “Ask YouTube,” the chatbot-style feature pulls results from longform videos, YouTube Shorts, and text about what you're searching for, reported The Verge.
With “Ask YouTube,” users can type natural language questions instead of short search terms. The system then generates a response that combines AI-written summaries with relevant videos. Users have the option to ask follow-up questions to refine their search results.
The experience is reportedly designed to make users feel closer to interacting with an AI assistant.

Instead of simply listing videos, “Ask YouTube” surfaces contextual information alongside content, helping users understand a topic before diving into videos. Results may also include timestamped clips and grouped playlists.
Google has currently introduced the feature to limited users. It is available to those with YouTube Premium in the United States and are aged 18 and above, the report added.
How Does It Work?
In the search bar, users will see an “Ask YouTube” button.
Click the search bar and it will show prompts like “funny baby elephant playing clips,” “summary of the rules of volleyball,” and “short history of the Apollo 11 moon landing.”
If the search box is blank but a user clicks the Ask YouTube button, YouTube takes to a full page with suggested searches and a text box to ask a question.
How Will It Help Creators?
For creators, this could reshape how their content gets discovered. Traditional YouTube search rewards videos with strong descriptions, titles, and tags that match user queries. A conversational AI system might surface videos based on different signals - how well the actual content answers common questions, how the AI interprets topical relevance or whether transcripts contain relevant information.
Still Experimental With Accuracy Concerns
Accuracy, like many other generative AI aspects, is still a concern. Early testing revealed that the chatbot can occasionally provide misleading or incorrect information, emphasising the importance of users verifying details from credible sources. This reflects ongoing issues in AI-powered search engines, where ease and speed can come at the expense of precision.
The introduction of “Ask YouTube” aligns with Google's wider effort to integrate AI across its ecosystem, transforming how users interact with search, content, and information.
