Facebook parent Meta is set to fire 200 employees in Silicon Valley amid its increasing adoption and implementation of AI, according to news reports on Monday. The company may also let go of 20% of its workforce or 15,000 employees, according to reports citing senior employees who were informed to prepare for layoffs.
Meta told The New York Post that "this is a speculative report about theoretical approaches." The social meta tech giant will cut down on 200 job roles in the San Francisco Bay Area, USA, according to reports citing state filings.
These documents submitted to the US Government state that 124 employees in Burlingame, California and 74 near Sunnyvale were to be laid off. The firings willl be in effect by the latter half of May with all these positions being "permanently eliminated" as per the filings.

A spokesperson told The New York Post that teams across the company implement restructuring measures on a regular basis to make sure they're in the best position to achieve their goals.
They also said that the company is finding opportunities for the employees that were let go, wherever it is deemed possible. The firm will still be hiring for critical roles with a 6% YoY (year-on-year) uptick in its headcount, which stood at 78,865 as of Dec. 31, 2025.
These developments come amid Meta's endeavour to move away from labour intensive operations and to machine-led systems spearheaded by AI. The firm plans to spend $10 billion on the creation of a data center in El Paso, Texas.
Meta's chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg put into place a "year of efficiency" between 2022 to 2023 as 20,000 job roles were done away with in the company.

Zuckerberg also credited AI tools with giving one talented person the ability to undertake projects that used to require a team of people in a recent earnings call as per reports.
