- Alliance of General Information Press urges French antitrust action against Google AI summaries
- The group claims Google uses media content without consent or compensation
- They request a ruling like Meta's, requiring royalty negotiations for AI content use
In response to Google's use of AI-generated article summaries, the Alliance of General Information Press, which represents French newspapers and magazines, has formally asked France's antitrust authority to take action.
The trade association claims that Google's "AI Overviews" tool unilaterally uses their media material without their consent or just compensation.
The organisation has urged the regulator to make a ruling similar to the one that mandated Meta to present a payment schedule and start negotiating royalties with traditional media for the use of their content by AI technologies, according to a report by Reuters.

According to a statement, the Alliance of General Information Press is against Google's recent unconsulted implementation of AI-generated article summaries.
"The unilateral deployment of new uses of press content, without prior authorisation or dedicated remuneration, disregards these commitments," the alliance stated, adding that traffic on their websites has decreased by between 33% and 38% as a result of AI-generated summaries, according to Arcom, the communications regulator.
The head of the alliance, Marc Feuillee, reportedly said, "The fact that AI is built upon media content means one single thing: this information has considerable value." He continued, "Publishers demand that this value be shared."
