Teen cricket prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is likely to be picked for the upcoming T20I tour of Ireland following his stellar IPL performance.
According to a report in The Indian Express, the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar is considering picking Sooryavanshi for the Indian squad. India are slated to travel to Ireland in June to play a two-match T20I series.
"He is in contention for the Ireland tour, and the selectors have shortlisted his name along with those of many other players," The Indian Express report stated, citing a source in the Indian cricket board. India will play three T20Is against Zimbabwe in July.
The left-hander had a thrilling start to the 2026 Indian Premier League season, amassing 200 runs in just five outings at a strike rate of 263.15, hitting two half-centuries along the way.
His ball-striking ability and the knack of attacking the best bowlers in the Opposition ranks has earned him praise from fans and experts alike. Seeing the teenager take down bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Josh Hazlewood, former cricketers and experts feel he is ready to play senior-level cricket.
If the 15-year-old is selected, he will become the youngest-ever India debutant. Currently, Sachin Tendulkar remains the youngest men's player to have represented India at the international level, making his debut at the age of 16 years and 205 days. Overall, Shafali Verma holds the national record, having debuted for the Indian women's team at the age of 15 years, seven months, and 27 days.
Sooryavanshi's rise to stardom
Sooryavanshi shot into the limelight when Rajasthan Royals bought him for Rs. 1.1 crore before the 2025 season of the IPL. He was just 13 years old then and it made him IPL's youngest-ever millionaire. In the 2025 season of the IPL, the youngster hammered a hundred off just 35 deliveries in a match against Gujarat Titans. The innings made the left-handed opener the youngest batter to hit a 100 in all of men's T20 cricket. It was also the second-quickest century in the IPL history.
Earlier this year, Sooryavanshi played a key role in helping India win the U-19 World Cup. In the final against England, he tore down the record books as he blasted 175 off just 80 balls, hitting 15 fours and as many sixes along the way. India beat England by 100 runs, and served as a reminder that Sooryavanshi's debut IPL season was not a one-hit wonder.
