Sarfaraz Khan has returned to India's Test squad after more than 19 months, replacing Sai Sudharsan for the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka, beginning Aug. 15.
The selection committee opted for Sarfaraz after Sudharsan's recovery from a right big-toe stress injury failed to progress sufficiently ahead of the series. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially announced Sarfaraz's inclusion on Sunday.

The 28-year-old is expected to join the Indian squad in Colombo before the team travels to Galle on Tuesday.
The Mumbai batter emerged as one of the leading contenders for the vacant spot alongside Shaik Rasheed and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Rasheed, who has been pushing for a place in the national side following a prolific domestic run, was considered for his ability to bat in the top order.
Gaikwad's experience and strong First-Class record also kept him in contention. Both batters had productive outings during India A's recent tour of Sri Lanka.
Sarfaraz's return marks a significant opportunity for the batter, whose Test career appeared to lose momentum after a promising start in 2024.
He made his Test debut that year and has since played six matches, scoring 371 runs at an average of 37.1, including one century.
He was notably left out of India's squad after the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. All six of his Test appearances came in 2024.
The Mumbai batter, however, has continued to perform strongly in domestic cricket, keeping himself in contention for a national recall despite his extended international absence. He has also been praised by many fans across the country for his transformation over the past year, having lost a significant amount of weight and becoming much fitter.

With Sudharsan ruled out, the vacancy at No. 3 provides Sarfaraz with another chance to revive his Test career and establish himself in India's middle order.
Sudharsan had been named in the original squad subject to receiving fitness clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence.
