Rohit Sharma's explosive 78 off 35 and Ryan Rickelton's 81 off 43 powered Mumbai Indians to their highest successful Indian Premier League chase, sealing a six-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders in their 2026 season opener at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. The five-time IPL champions reached the target of 221 in 19.1 overs as they won their season opener for the first time since 2012.
Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and decided to bowl first. Pandya's counterpart Ajinkya Rahane and IPL debutant Finn Allen gave KKR a brisk start with a 50-run opening partnership. Allen scored 37 in 17 balls, but Rahane impressed with a sublime innings of 67 in 40 deliveries. There was anticipation around Cameron Green, the season's most expensive player bought by KKR for Rs. 25.20 crore, but the Aussie all-rounder scored a meagre 18 in 10 balls. All three batters fell victim to Shardul Thakur's medium pace. With the figures 3/39, Thakur emerged as the most successful bowler of the match. Youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi hit 51 in 29 balls and helped KKR push the score beyond 200.

In the chase, Rohit and Rickelton came out all guns blazing with an opening partnership of 148 runs, setting the stage for the most successful run chase at the venue in the IPL history.
