Arsenal and Atletico Madrid head into the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final with a place in the final still hanging in the balance. With the aggregate score locked at 1-1, the second leg turns into a winner-takes-all contest at the Emirates Stadium in north London.
The first leg at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano last week was a tight, tactical affair. Both goals came from the penalty spot, with Viktor Gyökeres converting for Arsenal before Julián Alvarez responded for Atletico, leaving little to separate the sides heading into the return leg.
Arsenal had a second-half penalty overturned after a lengthy VAR review, which left Mikel Arteta fuming, calling the decision “unacceptable at this level”, further explaining that, “you cannot overturn that decision when you have to look at it 13 times."
Arsenal, however, shook off that incident and come into this tie on the back of a strong domestic result. The Gunners secured a 3-0 win over Fulham in the Premier League, a result that extends their lead at the top and gives their goal difference a much-needed boost as they push for a first league title in over two decades. Notably, Arteta did his best to rotate the squad, resting five regular starters while still maintaining intensity and control.
Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, took a different route. With their La Liga position largely settled, Diego Simeone opted for a full-scale rotation, leaving out all 11 players who featured in the first leg. Several key attackers, including Alvarez and Alexander Sørloth, were not even included in the squad, ensuring maximum recovery time ahead of the decisive second leg.

Atletico still managed a 2-0 victory over Valencia with academy graduates Iker Luque Sierra and Miguel Llorente scoring late goals.
Arsenal could be boosted by the return of Bukayo Saka to the starting XI after his limited involvement in Madrid. The Arsenal “Starboy”, started his first game in over a month on the weekend and marked his return with a goal and assist in a scintillating first-half display against Fulham.
Saka played the final 22 minutes against Atletico in the first leg and could be set for a bigger role in the return leg. The midfield pairing of Declan Rice and Martín Zubimendi remain central to Arsenal's control, while Martin Ødegaard's availability is a key fitness concern after missing the weekend fixture.
Atletico are expected to revert to their strongest XI, with Simeone likely to deploy a compact defensive structure and rely on transitions. The combination of Antoine Griezmann and Julián Alvarez remains critical in attack, with Ademola Lookman offering pace to exploit space behind Arsenal's defensive line.
