The Punjab cricket fraternity was left in mourning after former Punjab cricketer Amanpreet Singh Gill passed away in Chandigarh on Wednesday at the age of 36. The news was confirmed by the Punjab Cricket Association through a statement on social media.
“Punjab Cricket Association deeply mourns the sad demise of Amanpreet Singh Gill, former Punjab cricketer and Member, Senior Selection Committee Punjab,” the PCA posted on X.
While some reports suggested Gill had been battling a prolonged illness, the exact cause of death has not been officially disclosed by either his family or the PCA.
Tributes poured in from across the cricketing community, with several former teammates remembering Gill as a humble and hardworking figure within Punjab cricket. Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh described him as a “quiet and hardworking” cricketer who had a deep passion for the game.
Kohli posted on his social media admitting he was, "Shocked and saddened to hear about Amanpreet Gill's passing."
Gill was a right-arm medium pacer who represented Punjab in domestic cricket and belonged to the same generation of emerging Indian cricketers as Virat Kohli, Manish Pandey and Saurabh Tiwary.

He played six first-class matches for Punjab and picked up 11 wickets, with his final senior appearance coming in a Ranji Trophy match against Mumbai in 2008. He was also part of the Kings XI Punjab squad during the inaugural IPL season in 2008.
At the junior international level, Gill represented India in five Youth ODIs and one Youth Test in 2007. One of the highlights of his youth career was dismissing future Sri Lanka all-rounder Thisara Perera during a Youth Test.
Gill shared the field with Kohli during India's 2007 Under-19 Tri-Series campaign in Sri Lanka. Gill claimed nine wickets in five matches during the tri-series and produced a decisive spell in the final against Bangladesh to help India lift the title. However, he did not make the final squad for India's victorious 2008 Under-19 World Cup campaign in Malaysia.
Even after stepping away from professional cricket, Gill remained closely involved with the sport in Punjab. At the time of his passing, he was serving as a member of the Punjab Cricket Association's Senior Selection Committee and was actively involved in talent scouting and player development across the state.
