The Mumbai Cricket Association has initiated plans to build a 1,00,000-seater stadium in Navi Mumbai, making it one of the most significant infrastructure moves in Indian cricket in recent years.

MCA President Ajinkya Naik said he has begun the process, having met with Vijay Singh, managing director of City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Limited (CIDCO), on multiple occasions to initiate the "necessary processes to take this vision forward."

The project is positioned as a long-term upgrade to the iconic Wankhede Stadium, which has a limited seating capacity of 33,108.

Naik confirmed that the association has begun the process of acquiring land from CIDCO for the proposed venue.

The project draws from a 2025 promise made by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who had promised to allot land to MCA to build a new stadium which has a capacity of 1,00,000.

Navi Mumbai has been identified as the preferred site due to available land resources and the recently launched International Airport.

A six-month window has been set for planning, land acquisition, and design. Construction is expected to begin in late 2026.

The stadium is being designed as a state-of-the-art facility, with player development facilities, and a technology-driven spectator experience.

Capacity And Global Standing

Once completed, the Navi Mumbai stadium will become the second-largest cricket venue in India and the third-largest in the world by capacity.

Only the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and the Melbourne Cricket Ground will rank higher.

Narendra Modi Stadium (Ahmedabad): 1,32,000
Melbourne Cricket Ground: 1,00,024
Navi Mumbai Stadium (Proposed): 1,00,000

It will significantly surpass existing major venues such as Eden Gardens (68,000) and Raipur's Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium (65,000).

Why MCA Is Building It Now?

The move addresses structural limitations at the Wankhede Stadium, which, despite its historical significance, has a capacity of just over 33,000 and limited scope for expansion.

High-demand fixtures, including IPL playoffs and ICC tournament matches, routinely see demand far exceed supply in Mumbai.

A larger venue also strengthens Mumbai's case for hosting marquee events such as ICC finals, challenging the Narendra Modi Stadium in Gujarat.

Commercially, the project aligns with the shift towards high-capacity venues that maximise matchday revenue through ticketing and premium hospitality.

What It Means

If executed on schedule, the Navi Mumbai stadium will redefine Mumbai's role in global cricket.

It shifts the city's cricketing landscape from a heritage venue to a capacity-driven, high-income yielding model, one that aligns with the demands of modern sport.
