Good morning!
The Gift Nifty was trading around 23,103.50 level, a discount of nearly 7.10 points from the Nifty futures' previous close indicating negative open for the benchmark Nifty 50. The NSE Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex fell 1.64% and 1.67% respectively. US and European index futures are trading higher during Asian trading hours.
- S&P 500 futures trade 0.02% lower.
- Euro Stoxx 50 futures trade 0.43% down.
US Market Wrap
Fresh bond market volatility made traders hesitant to take on risk, with stocks choppy on concerns that high oil prices will stoke inflation and push the Federal Reserve to raise rates. The S&P 500 ended flat after trading sharply lower for most of the morning, recovering after Reuters reported talks of a phased reopening of the Strait, which triggered a brief pullback in oil from earlier highs. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 also pared losses to finish flat, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.3%.
Asian Market Wrap
A global bond selloff spread to Asia as high oil prices reignited inflation concerns, pushing long-term Treasury yields to multi-decade highs and fueling bets on further Federal Reserve rate hikes. Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 0.48% and the broader Topix gained 0.58%, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.50%. Markets in China and South Korea were closed for a holiday.
Commodity Check
Gold was on track to end the week lower as high energy prices kept alive expectations that the Federal Reserve will need to raise interest rates further to curb inflation. Bullion traded around $4,270 an ounce, down more than 2% since last Friday. Spot gold fell 0.1% to $4,271.54 an ounce at 7:50 a.m. in Singapore. Silver was down 0.2% at $63.68 an ounce and on track to end the week almost 4% lower. Platinum and palladium were little changed, according to Bloomberg.
Oil prices dropped on reports that US and Iranian negotiators are exploring a phased deal that would see Tehran reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Brent, the global benchmark, fell toward $106 a barrel after gaining more than 7% over the past two days, while West Texas Intermediate slipped below $94.
India Stock Market Recap
The Nifty 50 ended at 23,063, down 23 points from its provisional close of 23,085.60. The Sensex settled at 73,581, dropping a further 139 points from 73,719.83. The Nifty Bank fell 26 points from the provisional close to 55,438, while the Nifty Midcap 150 rose 15 points to settle at 22,470.
The Nifty 50 slipped to its lowest level in 117 sessions and traded at levels last seen on April 7, 2026. The Sensex touched its lowest level in 73 sessions, falling to levels last seen on June 11, 2026. The Nifty has declined more than 1,700 points over 37 sessions, while the Sensex has tumbled over 5,550 points in 36 sessions. The significant falls comes following a sharp rise in US Treasury yields and surging oil prices.
