For nearly a decade, the Toyota Fortuner has held its ground in India's premium SUV market. Its appeal goes beyond its size and road presence. For many buyers, it represents a combination of durability, long distance comfort and the ability to handle rough roads. But the competition has moved on, and buyers increasingly expect modern technology alongside the Fortuner's familiar rugged character.

Toyota is now preparing its next major update. The new Fortuner is scheduled to make its global debut on December 1, 2026, while its India launch is expected in 2027. The company has yet to announce an Indian launch date or confirm the complete specifications.

New Toyota Fortuner: What Could Change?

Spy shots from overseas testing suggest that the SUV will receive a noticeably revised design. The front could feature a more upright grille, slimmer lighting elements and a taller bonnet, while changes to the rear may include a redesigned tailgate and updated LED tail lamps.

However, the Fortuner is not expected to abandon the formula that made it popular. Reports suggest it could retain its IMV ladder frame platform and familiar upright proportions, with substantial changes to the exterior panels. This would allow Toyota to modernise the SUV without moving away from its established rugged character.

Cabin And Features: A Much Needed Update?

The cabin could be one of the biggest areas of improvement. The current Fortuner has received updates over the years, but its interior design is beginning to feel dated compared with newer rivals. The upcoming model is expected to get a larger touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster and improved connectivity. Advanced driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, lane assist and autonomous emergency braking, could also be offered on selected variants. These features have not been confirmed for the India model.

Engine And Performance: Will The Diesel Continue?

The familiar 2.8 litre diesel engine is expected to continue, alongside manual and automatic transmission options. Four wheel drive is also likely to remain available, preserving the Fortuner's appeal among buyers who value off road capability. Toyota could retain the 2.7 litre petrol engine in India, but the final powertrain lineup is yet to be confirmed. The company has not announced whether the new model will receive any mechanical changes.

New Toyota Fortuner India Launch And Expected Price

The new Toyota Fortuner is expected to reach India in 2027, although buyers may have to wait until the second half of the year. A report by The Times of India Auto, says the SUV is expected to launch in India in 2027, with the exact date yet to be announced. Meanwhile, Business Today reported that the India launch could take place in early 2027. These timelines remain speculative, as Toyota has not confirmed its India launch schedule.

Price expectations are also beginning to emerge. The Times of India Auto estimates that the next generation Fortuner could start at around Rs 40 lakh, ex showroom. This would put it above the current entry level variants, although the final price will depend on the model's equipment, engine options and variant lineup. Toyota has not announced official prices yet.

The Fortuner's next chapter is about more than a new grille or a larger screen. Toyota needs to preserve the SUV's hard wearing appeal while giving buyers a stronger reason to choose it in a market where premium SUVs are becoming more sophisticated. The December unveiling should reveal how far the company is willing to take that change.
