The rising tensions among the United States, Iran and Israel are now spilling over into India, disrupting religious customs and causing a shortfall of siropas, the traditional robes of honour at the Golden Temple and other key Sikh shrines.
A siropa is typically a saffron or orange cloth measuring around 2 to 2.5 metres, symbolising blessings from the Guru and collective respect of the Sikh community.
Officials say petroleum-based inputs essential for manufacturing synthetic fibres like polyester and blended fabrics traditionally used in siropas, have become scarce amid the conflict.
As a result, a large portion of pending orders remains unfulfilled, significantly straining availability.
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which oversees key institutions including the Akal Takht and Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, requires nearly seven-eight lakh metres of siropa cloth annually.
However, supply has dropped sharply due to disruptions in petrochemical imports from West Asia.
A senior functionary at the shrine said that against an order of 1 lakh metres, only a fraction has been delivered so far, showing the severity of the supply crunch.
It is commonly presented to devotees after the completion of Akhand Path ceremonies.
Following the shortage of the siropa, gurdwaras have begun limiting distribution of the robes, making it difficult to sustain long-standing traditions.
Disruptions in imports — particularly from Iran — have affected production by domestic suppliers, including those based in Gujarat.

The SGPC procures siropas through an e-tendering process, typically at around Re 30 per metre, with annual spending estimated between Rs 21 lakh and Re 25 lakh.
However, the current shortage has raised concerns about sourcing alternatives within India.
Amid dwindling supplies, the SGPC has already imposed restrictions on the presentation of siropas.
Since 2024, the honour has largely been reserved for religious figures such as the Panj Pyare, ragis, and preachers, with presentations to VIPs and political figures curtailed.
