Satheesan, Chennithala and Venugopal are seen as key contendors for the chief ministerial post.

The United Democratic Front (UDF) has returned to power in Kerala, ending a decade-long rule of the Left Democratic Front (LDF). However, the alliance is yet to name its Chief Minister, triggering intense discussions within the Congress.

Three leaders are reportedly at the centre of the race — VD Satheesan, Ramesh Chennithala, and K. C. Venugopal.

The election verdict reflects a clear shift in voter sentiment, with the UDF crossing the majority mark comfortably. Anti-incumbency, governance concerns, and fatigue with two consecutive LDF terms appear to have driven the outcome.

Satheesan, who led the Opposition campaign, is widely seen as the frontrunner. His role in steering the UDF's campaign and reported backing from allies like the Indian Union Muslim League strengthened his position.

Chennithala, a former Home Minister, remains a strong contender due to his experience and long-standing presence in Kerala politics. Supporters view him as a dependable administrative choice.

Venugopal, known for his close ties with the Congress high command, is being seen as a possible consensus candidate. His organisational influence at the national level could play a role in the final decision.

Senior leader P. J. Kurien has indicated that the Chief Minister will be chosen after consultations with MLAs, with the final call resting with the party leadership in Delhi.

With allies also expected to weigh in, the decision is likely to balance leadership, experience, and political strategy as the UDF prepares to form the next government.
