In a setback to actor-turned-politician Vijay days ahead of polling in Tamil Nadu, the Madras High Court has directed the Income Tax Department to file its response to a petition alleging a discrepancy exceeding Rs 100 crore in the election affidavits submitted by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief.

Vijay's party is contesting its maiden election in Tamil Nadu, currently governed by Chief Minister M. K. Stalin of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

While his filing for the Tiruchirappalli seat reportedly lists an income of Rs 220 crore, the Perambur affidavit mentions Rs 115 crore — indicating a gap of Rs105 crore.

Vijay is set to make his electoral debut in a multi-cornered contest. In Tiruchirappalli East, he faces DMK candidate Inigo S. Irudayaraj, while in Perambur he is up against sitting MLA R.D. Sekar.
