Students who scored above 90% in the Central Board of Secondary Education Class 10 exams are opting for re-examinations in Mumbai to improve their marks. The race is no longer about passing the board exams - it is about pushing already strong scores even higher.
The shift has emerged after Class 10 results were declared last week. Students in the 80-90% range are leading demand for re-tests, aiming to move into the top scorer bracket, according to a Mid-Day report.
Data showed that 35 of the 339 students who appeared for the exams scored above 90%. But schools say many of those students still want another attempt, especially in subjects such as Mathematics and English.
Rising Demand
"I had a class of 30 students who appeared for class 10 boards; of these, 12 are to appear for a re-test. Many of these have already scored between 80-90 per cent, but they know that they have the capabilities to go higher," said Shambhunath Gosavi, principal of BMC Mithagar School, speaking to Mid-Day.
The trend suggests the new re-exam option is being used not only by students who missed expectations, but also by those seeking stronger final scorecards.
More Schools
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said students from 12 civic-run CBSE schools received their Class 10 results on April 15. That was a sharp rise from one school that qualified for the board exams last year.
At RN Podar School, nearly 30% of the Class 10 batch has registered for re-exams, driven by students looking to convert high marks into perfect scores.
Road Ahead?
"Students scoring 93-94 in Mathematics are attempting the exams again, aiming for a perfect 100," senior headmistress Suman Samarth told Mid-Day.
"Even those with confirmed seats want to improve their marks. They see this new provision as a valuable second opportunity to refine their final records," she added.
The trend shows that for many students, board results are no longer the finish line. They are becoming the first step in chasing higher scores.
