The Maharashtra government has unveiled proposals for an Innovation City near Navi Mumbai International Airport, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirming the plan on Thursday. He added that the Tata Group is set to invest nearly $11 billion in the development, which will also house a major data centre.
The announcement was made while the World Economic Forum's 2026 summit was taking place in the Swiss resort town of Davos.
What Is Innovation City: Key Points
– As per Fadnavis, it is Maharashtra's dream project. It is expected to be a game-changer in the world of AI.
– The future-ready hub will rise near Navi Mumbai International Airport and will place the state “at the heart of AI, semiconductors and GCC.”
– This world-class innovation ecosystem will also “strengthen the state's economic future.”
Tata Sons will make an investment worth $11 billion.This will lead to the creation of a “plug-and-play innovation system” in Mumbai. The project execution will begin after six to eight months. "We have just identified the location and sketched one of its details, which we can now refer to as the contour. The plan is to take the next six to eight months before we begin," Fadnavis said.
With Innovation City, the state aims to bring global innovation ecosystems to Mumbai. The aim is to “make Mumbai a hub where anyone in the world can easily access a plug-and-play innovation system.”
