The Delhi Police registered a case against Blinkit for allegedly selling knives that were beyond the legal regulation size, according to an official's statement on Wednesday.
Law enforcement obtained 50 knives that were up for sale on the firm's quick commerce delivery platform that breached the regulatory norms with regards to the size of the blade and its specifications. Sharp objects such as knives can have a maximum blade length of 7.62 cm and a width of 1.72 cm, the law states that any blades that exceed these specifications are illegal.
Blinkit has not made an official statement regarding the matter as of yet.
Delhi police registered a case against Blinkit on Feb. 14, under the applicable sections of Arms Act, after they found out that select knives that violated these regulations were up for sale on the company's platform.
When going through online platforms, law enforcement detected a utility 'Stanley knife' that could be ordered via the delivery app. In order to verify the same, the cops ordered the knife and had a look at it after it was delivered.
The knife could fold manually and measured 8 cm in length and 2.5 cm in width, making it an illegal arm under the law, police said.
Law enforcement logged a case and commenced their investigation shortly after. On Feb. 15, the police teams undertook searches at multiple stores connected to Blinkit in Delhi and recovered 16 illegal knives.
On Feb. 16, the police broadened their investigation, recovering 32 more illegal knives from a warehouse situated in Farrukhnagar, Gurugram, taking the tally of blades recovered to 50, the police said.
Law enforcement is scrutinising supply chains, procurement sources and looking into which individuals were responsible for stocking and distributing the banned products. The police may issue notices to the entities as a part of their current investigation.
