Lazada Layoffs: Alibaba Unit Slashes 5% Of Workforce In Southeast Asia

Alibaba's Southeast Asia-based e-commerce subsidiary Lazada is set to layoff 10% of its employees in Southeast Asia, according to a Bloomberg report on Tuesday.

The firm operates out of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.  The company stated that the firings wre being instituted so that the firm remains "focused, efficient and aligned with current business needs", according to a report from CNA.

Lazada statated that it is  acommitted to extending its support to the employees affected by the layoffs with their transition from the company via relevant guidance and support, in accordance with applicable requirements. The company said that it is "reviewing select roles" across the regions it is operating in.

In Singapore, the firm stated that it is collobarating with the Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union (FDAWU) to make sure that the process is undertaken smoothly and with accountability and that proper asistance is provided to those that have been let go.

"Across other markets, we are also working with relevant government entities and agencies, where required, to ensure the process is managed in accordance with local requirements and with due consideration for those impacted," the firm said in a statement cited by CNA.

FDAWU's General Secretary Sankaradass S Chami stated that Lazada had provided piror notice to the union regarding the layoffs and that the union is coordinating with Lazda to support the laid off members and workers.

The firm is set to provide affected union members with one year of union membership as well as training grant support.
