Make Canada 51st US State: Donald Trump After Justin Trudeau Resigns

US President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday again spoke about Canada merging with the US to become its 51st state after Justin Trudeau resigned as the prime minister of the country.

Taking a dig at the Canadian leader, Trump said Trudeau knew the US will no longer suffer the "massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat".

Trump has repeatedly complained of US' trade deficit with Canada and taken digs at the Canadian government in Ottawa that is at odds with his views.

"Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned," Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social.

"If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!" he added.

Facing internal party pressure, Justin Trudeau resigned on Monday and said that he will remain prime minister until his party selects a new leader. The Canadian Parliament will remain suspended until March 24. 

Canada has long depended on its southern neighbour for defence as part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, which has also invited Trump's criticism.

During his first term, the US president terminated a free trade deal with Canada and Mexico called NAFTA.
