The date of Eid-al-Fitr in India will depend on the sighting of the new moon on Sunday. Since Islam follows the lunar calendar, the holy month of Ramadan, also referred to as Ramzan in the Indian subcontinent, is either of 29 or 30 days.
Eid is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal — the Islamic month following Ramadan. If the moon is sighted on Sunday, then the festival would be observed on Monday. In case of the moon not being sighted, then Eid will be celebrated on Tuesday.
Also, the lunar cycle varies by a day in the Indian subcontinent and other parts of the world, including Saudi Arabia, which houses the holiest sites of Islam.
Therefore, the 29th Ramadan was observed in Saudi Arabia and most other parts of the world on Saturday. At the time of sunset, the moon sighting committees in these countries looked for the Shawwal crescent.
Notably, Ramadan is a month-long period during which Muslims fast from dawn to dusk.
As Ramadan began on March 1 in Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries, the moon sighting was attempted in those nations on Saturday. Since the holy month began in India on March 2, the 29th date of Ramadan would be observed here on Sunday.

How To Track Eid Date Announcements?
Muslims can track Eid-related updates and announcements on social media and news channels. Whether countries like Saudi Arabia will celebrate Eid on Sunday or not, was to be confirmed by officials following Saturday's moon sighting event. Saudi's state-controlled media, Al Arabiya was to share the live updates on its digital handles.
In India, the Ruet-e-Hilal Committees, or the moon sighting committees of different states, would make the announcement on moon sighting post the sunset on Sunday. The local mosques are also expected to convey the announcements in their respective areas.
