Your WhatsApp Phone Number Will Stay Hidden With This Username Feature — Releasing Soon

In a bid to enhance user privacy — especially when it comes to stopping unknown people from knowing a user's phone number — WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature that would let users select a unique username and hide their phone number. 

WABetaInfo, a WhatsApp update tracker, claims that the security feature is present in the most recent iOS beta. By enabling users to converse using a distinct username rather than their phone number, this new feature aims to provide users greater control over their privacy.

According to WABetaInfo, phone numbers will no longer be the main method of identification on WhatsApp. Rather, users will be allowed to select a distinctive username that conforms with certain rules. 

To avoid usernames with only numbers or symbols, they must include at least one alphabetical character. Only the following characters will be allowed: lowercase letters (a–z), numbers 0–9, underscores, and periods. 

Once WhatsApp confirms the username, it will be used in group chats and conversations in place of the phone number. In the event that a user changes their username later, WhatsApp will notify contacts of the change through chat messages. This method is the same as the one WhatsApp uses to update phone numbers or profile photos.

WhatsApp also intends to implement an optional PIN code feature associated with usernames, which will be necessary in order for other users to start a new discussion with the user. The feature is being developed to decrease unsolicited messages.

Additionally, in a future update to WhatsApp Web, users will be able to verify the availability of usernames before choosing one. This change could simplify the process of locating a distinctive handle and help avoid confusion. 

A widespread rollout of the username feature is anticipated in the upcoming weeks.
