Maharashtra Police On Alert, Shiv Sena Workers May Take To Streets

Police authorities in Maharashtra have issued an alert across the state as Shiv Sena supporters are likely to stage angry protests following senior leader and minister Eknath Shinde's rebellion, an official told PTI on Friday.

A couple of incidents of Sena workers targeting the hoardings or boards featuring rebel MLAs who are with Shinde have been reported in the state.

A general alert has been issued to all district unit commanders like superintendents of police and police commissioners, asking them to take steps to prevent any untoward incident, said an official.

Sharad Pawar Meets CM Uddhav Thackrey

NCP president Sharad Pawar on Friday evening met Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray at the latter's residence.

State NCP president Jayant Patil and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar accompanied Pawar as he arrived at `Matoshree', Thackeray's private residence in Bandra area.

Congress Asks Eknath Shinde To Leave Flood-Hit Assam

The Assam unit of the Congress on Friday staged demonstrations near a luxury hotel where rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde and other Maharashtra MLAs accompanying him are staying demanding that they leave the state as it is reeling under a devastating flood.

Assam Congress chief Bhupen Bora also wrote a letter to Shinde telling him that their presence at such a critical juncture has "defamed" the state.

NCP Leaders To Meet CM Thackeray

Maharashtra Deputy CM and NCP leader Ajit Pawar said the party's leaders will go to meet Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray at 6.30 p.m. today at Matoshree.

"Our stand is the same as yesterday. We will try to keep the government stable," he said.

Deputy Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly approved the appointment of MLA Ajay Chaudhary as Shiv Sena legislative party leader in the Assembly.

37 Shiv Sena MLAs Declare Eknath Shinde As Leader

As many as 37 rebel Shiv Sena MLAs wrote to Maharashtra Assembly's Deputy Speaker, declaring that rebel leader Eknath Shinde remains their leader in the House.

This follows Shiv Sena's petition before the deputy speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly that demanded the membership of 12 MLAs cancelled.

"You cannot scare us by giving the names of 12 MLAs for disqualification because we are followers of the Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray. We know the law, so we do not pay heed to threats," Shinde responded in a tweet.

Here's What Has Happened So Far In Maharashtra

Rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde's move to camp in Guwahati, with the support of at least 38 MLAs from the Maharashtra Assembly, has thrown the Maha Vikas Aghadi government into a crisis.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has moved out of his official residence Varsha and back into his family home Matoshree as a result of the move. The NCP and Congress, the two parties in the MVA with Shiv Sena, have pledged their support to Thackeray.

Senior leaders from the Shiv Sena are prompting the rebel MLAs to come back to Mumbai to discuss issues with the alliance, adding that they are ready to walk out of the MVA, but only after discussions.
