In the financial year 2023-24, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) received the lion’s share of political donations, collecting over Rs 2,243 crore from 8,358 contributions, according to a report released by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).
This amount is more than six times the combined donations declared by the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), National People’s Party (NPEP), and CPI(M).
The Congress followed with Rs 281.48 crore from 1,994 donations. The data, compiled from submissions to the Election Commission, covers only those donations above Rs 20,000 made to national political parties.
Top 10 Donors Who Contributed Significantly To National Parties:
1. Prudent Electoral Trust
Total Donations: Rs 880 crore
To BJP: Rs 723.6 crore (32.25% of BJP’s total funds)
To Congress: Rs 156.4 crore (55.56% of Congress’s total funds)
This trust remains the single largest donor to national political parties.
2. Triumph Electoral Trust
Donated Rs 127.5 crore exclusively to BJP.
3. ITC Infotech India Ltd
Donated Rs 80 crore (beneficiary party not specified in the report but part of the top donors list).
4. Acme Solar Energy Pvt. Ltd.
Contributed Rs 51 crore (party-wise split not disclosed).
5. Derive Investments
Donated Rs 50 crore to BJP and Rs 3.2 crore to Congress.
6. Rungta Sons Private Limited
Gave Rs 50 crore (beneficiary party not mentioned).
7. Bharat Biotech International Ltd
Donated Rs 50 crore (party not specified).
8. Dinesh Chandra R. Agarwal Infracon Pvt. Ltd.

The ADR report shows that corporate and business sectors accounted for a dominant share of political donations – Rs 2,262.5 crore through 3,755 contributions – forming 88.9% of the total donations to national parties.
The BJP attracted the majority of these corporate donations, receiving Rs 2,064.58 crore from 3,478 business-related contributions. The party also received Rs 169.13 crore from 4,628 individual donors.
Congress secured Rs 190.3 crore from corporates and Rs 90.9 crore from 1,882 individuals.
With Rs 2,064.5 crore from corporate donors alone, the BJP received more than nine times the total corporate donations reported by all other national parties combined in FY 23-24.
