Heavy Rainfall In Tamil Nadu For Next Two Days: IMD Issues Orange Alert In Four Districts

The IMD has issued heavy to very heavy rain alert for the districts of Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari in the next two days.

Heavy rainfall is expected in Tamil Nadu until March 12, with several southern districts of the state placed under an orange and yellow alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for Tuesday. Isolated areas in Tamil Nadu may also experience light to moderate rainfall today, but the rain spell will intensify at some locations tomorrow.

Besides Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and the port city of Karaikal are also expected to receive rainfall this week.

“Light-moderate rain is likely at isolated places over coastal Tamil Nadu on March 10; at many places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal areas on Mar. 11; at few places over south Tamil Nadu and, at isolated places over north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and Karaikal areas on Mar. 12,” the IMD’s Chennai centre said on Monday.

At least four districts in Tamil Nadu, including Kanyakumari, have been placed on an orange alert for Tuesday. The IMD also predicted heavy to very heavy downpours in Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Tenkasi.  

Other coastal districts including Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Sivagangai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai in Tamil Nadu will be on a yellow alert for Tuesday, anticipating heavy rain at isolated places. Karaikal will also be on a yellow alert, the IMD said.

A day later, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts of Tamil Nadu will experience heavy rain at isolated places, according to the weather body’s forecast. According to the IMD’s numerical model guidance, heavy rainfall is considered as a downpour ranging from 64.5 to 115.5 milimetre at a particular location.

On the other hand, states like Gujarat and Rajasthan are experiencing heat wave-like conditions due to above normal temperatures. The IMD has predicted a heatwave spell at isolated locations in Gujarat and southwest Rajasthan till March 12. A similar situation will be seen in Odisha on March 13-14.

Meanwhile, hilly states such as Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Jammu-Kashmir continued to experience snowfall and rainfall at isolated places today.
