India’s active Covid-19 infection tally continued to fall at a time when concerns about a mutant strain of the virus from U.K. forced new restrictions across various cities and states.

The country reported little more than 23,000 fresh Covid-19 infections in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry’s update at 8 a.m. on Dec. 25. That includes close to 9.71 lakh recoveries and 1.47 lakh deaths. Active cases have fallen below the 3-lakh mark.

Key Figures

  • Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 1,01,46,845
  • Active cases: 2,81,919
  • Cured/discharged/migrated: 97,17,834
  • Deaths: 1,47,092
  • Number of fresh cases in 24 hours: 23,067

A number of Indian states and cities have re-imposed some lockdown restrictions amid year-end festivities to ensure that infections remain in check. Besides, a new, more infectious variant of coronavirus, detected first in U.K., has renewed fears about another wave of Covid-19 in the country. India has already cancelled all flights to and from the U.K. till at least Dec. 31.

Maharashtra has imposed a night curfew across all civic corporations from restricting movement between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Karnataka imposed a night curfew but has now withdrawn that order. Punjab, too, lifted its night curfew on Thursday night for Christmas eve. States have also started putting in institutional quarantine for travellers who may have returned from U.K.

Global Update:

Globally, cases crossed 78.8 million leaving over 1.73 million dead.

Germany identified its first case of the coronavirus variant that has emerged in the U.K. China said it would pause flights to and from the U.K. Mexico administered the first Covid-19 vaccine in Latin America in a live broadcast. Chile and Costa Rica are also expected to start their vaccination campaigns using Pfizer Inc. shots.
