Live: Sensex Turns Flat Ahead Of F&O Expiry; Small-Caps Outperform

1:54 p.m.: The stock markets turned flat in late noon deals ahead of expiry of futures and options contracts. The Sensex was up 19 points at 29,550 and the broader Nifty was hovering around its important psychological level of 9,150.

1:20 p.m.: Banking shares were witnessing good buying interest. The Nifty Bank index was up 0.51 per cent; Punjab National Bank was the top gainer from this space, up 2.52 per cent at Rs 152.60. Canara Bank, Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra Bank, IndusInd Bank, State Bank of India and HDFC Bank were also among the gainers.

1:04 p.m.: Capital Goods index rises 0.74 per cent on the back of gains in Larsen & Toubro, Suzlon Energy, Havells India, ABB, Thermax and Kalpatru Power.

12:55 p.m.: Kotak Mahindra Bank board approves fund raising scheme by issuing 6.2 crore shares of face value of Rs 5 each via QIP or FPO; shares up 1 per cent.

12:36 p.m.: On the index options front, Nifty 9,200 call option was the most active call option with an open interest of 8.8 million shares. On the put options front, Nifty 9,100 put options contract was the most active with 7.1 million shares in the open interest.

On the other hand, Axis Bank, Power Grid, Idea Cellular, BHAL and Coal India were among the losers.

9:34 a.m.: Sensex and Nifty edged higher in opening deals on Thursday ahead of expiry of futures and options contracts for the month of March which is due later in the day. The Indian rupee continued to show its strength against the US dollar rising to 64.88 per dollar, its strongest level against the dollar in over 17 months.  The rupee's gains have been more pronounced since February 8, the day the Reserve Bank of India in a surprise move decided to keep interest rate unchanged and also signalled a change in its policy stance from "accommodative" to "neutral".

In Wednesday's trading session, foreign institutional investors bought shares worth Rs 461 crore while domestic institutional investors bought shares worth Rs 1,283 crore.

Meanwhile, in opening deals, from the Nifty basket of shares, 31 were trading higher while 20 were among the losers.

State Bank of India was among the top Nifty gainers, up 1.33 per cent at Rs 292.30. IndusInd Bank, Bank of Baroda, Adani Ports and SEZ, Larsen & Toubro, Kotak Mahindra Bank and ONGC were also among the gainers.

On the other hand, HCL Technologies was the top Nifty loser, down 1.2 per cent at Rs 867. Axis Bank, Bharti Infratel, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, Wipro, Lupin and Bharti Airtel were also among the laggards.

On the sectoral front, buying was visible across the sectors with capital goods and real estate indices up close to 1 per cent.
