Balenciaga Appoints New CEO as Fashion Merry-Go-Round Gains Pace

(Bloomberg) -- French fashion house Balenciaga appointed Cedric Charbit as chief executive officer as owner Kering SA hands the reins to an executive from its Saint Laurent brand.

Charbit, 39, succeeds Isabelle Guichot, who held the role for nine years and will take on new responsibilities within Kering, the Paris-based parent said Monday.

It’s the latest bout of management turnover in the beleaguered fashion industry, following Kering’s appointment last month of former Hugo Boss chief Claus-Dietrich Lahrs as the new head of its Bottega Veneta brand. Burberry Group Plc has handed the CEO role to Marco Gobbetti, allowing Christopher Bailey to steer the creative side, while Gianni Versace SpA has also replaced its CEO, tapping Jonathan Akeroyd from Kering’s Alexander McQueen.

For Balenciaga, the appointment marks a further change at the top for a brand that was founded by Cristobal Balenciaga in 1919 and acquired by Kering in 2001. Demna Gvasalia took over from Alexander Wang as the fashion house’s creative head about a year ago.

Charbit joined Saint Laurent in 2012 and earlier this year took on the role of executive vice president of product and marketing. At Balenciaga, he will be tasked with accelerating the brand’s international growth, Kering said in a statement.
