In India, gaining admission to colleges is challenging due to rigorous entrance exams such as NEET and JEE prompting many students to contemplate studying abroad, including in Iran. For students hailing from regions like Jammu and Kashmir, Iran is an appealing destination due to the cultural and historical connections shared between the two nations, along with common religious and educational practices.
Prior to the onset of the conflict, approximately 1,500 to 2,000 Indian students were enrolled in medical programs in Iran, as their families felt that obtaining a degree from a foreign country would enhance their career prospects.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated that the Indian embassy in Tehran is consistently in touch with the Indian citizens in Iran, offering them ongoing guidance. Approximately 9,000 to 10,000 Indian individuals, comprising students, labourers, devotees, travelers, entrepreneurs, and maritime workers spread across 16 provinces in Iran.
